The real work behind a loincloth

⏱️ 3 min read

Woven, not produced. Behind each loincloth, there are hours of precise gestures, strips woven on a narrow loom , then assembled one by one. It is this work - the hand , the time , the material - that gives its value to Faso Dan Fani .

What is a Faso Dan Fani loincloth?

Faso Dan Fani is a hand-woven textile from Burkina Faso . It is characterized by longitudinal stripes (predominantly warp), a plain weave (simple and dense weave), and a historical format: narrow strips woven on a loom, then assembled to form larger pieces (stole, skirt, plaid, etc.).

Why this strip format?

  • Heritage of narrow looms : handy, robust, suitable for artisanal production.
  • Tension control : regularity of weaving, impeccable hold.
  • Modularity : we assemble according to the final use (clothing, accessory, home).

The process, step by step

1) Threads & color

  • Selection of cotton and preparation of colors (indigo, ivory, sometimes warm touches). The objective: a readable, matte palette , which enhances the weave.

2) Warping (prepare the warp)

The warp threads are counted and stretched to a precise length. The rhythm of the stripes (wide, fine, micro-thread) is decided here—it's the visual DNA of the loincloth.

3) Narrow loom weaving

By hand, shuttle after shuttle, we cross the weft and the warp in plain weave .

Density : a guarantee of durability .

Regularity : Clean stripes that will fit together perfectly when assembled.

4) Assembling the strips

The stripes are aligned so that the stripes match neatly, then stitched with a neat seam (reinforced if necessary). This is a long and delicate step—the hallmark of a premium loincloth.

5) Finishing & control

Spinning of small excesses, neat hems , steam to stabilize, quality control . Each piece must fit well and age well .

Why the price is right

A quality loincloth reflects:

  • Time : hours per meter on the loom + assembly.
  • The hand : transmitted know-how , fair remuneration .
  • The material : selected cotton , stable and harmonious colors .
  • Durability : weave density, finishes that hold.

Investing in a loincloth means paying for its lifespan. It's better to have a durable piece that you can wear for a long time than a disposable textile.

How to recognize a real, well-made loincloth

  • Stripes aligned at assembly seams.
  • Matte & dense texture , without plastic appearance.
  • Regular pattern , small “living” irregularities (proof of the gesture).
  • Hold : the fabric “sits” well, even after gentle washing.

Maintenance (to keep it for a long time)

  • Cold delicate wash , separate colors.
  • Dry flat , away from direct sunlight.
  • Gentle ironing , on the reverse side if possible.
  • Folded storage , avoid hangers for heavy items.

Local impact & traceability

We work with partner workshops in Burkina Faso:

  • Fair income , small series orders.
  • Short circuit : fewer intermediaries, more traceability.
  • Transmission : supporting weaving means maintaining a living heritage .
